What is Ayurveda?
Sanskrit āyurvedaḥ, from āyuḥ life, vital power + vedaḥ knowledge
Ayurveda means “science of life”. It is an ancient and mature medical practice that focuses on balancing the body and alleviating dis-ease and separation between mind, body and spirit.
The practice focuses on bringing one's diet and lifestyle into synchronicity with the natural rhythms of our world.
Ayurveda reawakens wisdom by building awareness of how foods, stress and habits affect our bodies. With this information, we are able to gently invite healing to the body at a very deep level.
A main tenet of Ayurveda is that digestion plays a huge role in health. The old adage “we are what we eat” is expanded to “we are what we can digest”. By bringing our digestive system into harmony with the seasons of the day, the year and our lives, we allow our bodies to more efficiently receive nutrients from our food. Without strong digestion, the body can’t assimilate the nutrients needed to build tissue, and disease and illness are the inevitable result.
Lifestyle plays an important part in seasonal balance as well. How we exercise, sleep and practice self care are all influenced by season changes. Ayurveda provides an array of tools to reawaken our own wisdom so that we can live more easily in our out-of-balance world.
